Bollywood is awaiting for the biggest box office clash in the history of Indian cinema as Raees and Sultan will release on Eid 2016. But the trade is not very happy about the clash.
Bollywood has definitely learnt a lesson from Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani clash. It has proved that content is the ultimate king at the box office. Dilwale which was considered as a sure shot 200 crore hit, suffered from the clash and finished its run under 150 crore. Bajirao Mastani riding high on terrific word of mouth, went on to collect over 185 crore.
As for now both Raees and Sultan are scheduled to release on Eid 2016. Furhan Akhtar has recently said that he is confident of his product and hope that the film will work at the box office despite the clash. Yash Raj Films has also confirmed twice that Sultan will definitely release on Eid.
2016 is crowed with many big release and we will witness many box office clashes. So what can be the alternative release date for Raees and Sultan?
On Independence Day, there are already two films Mohenjo Daro and Rustom are releasing. It is not a big holiday like EDX and there will be multiple releases before and after that.
Another festive season Diwali will witness big clash of Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Ajay Devgn’s Shivaay. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil will be a big threat at multiplexes and Shivaay at single screens. Ajay Devgn does not change his release dates. He has once clashed with SRK when Son of Sardar and Jab Tak Hai Jaan released on Dilwali 2012.
On Christmas, Aamir Khan will arrive with Dangal. His last 3 films released on Christmas, 3 Idiots, Dhoom 3 and PK went on to become the highest grosser of all time. So it will be very unwise decession to clash with a Aamir Khan starrer.
There is one holiday left of Gandhi Jayanti. Shahid Kapoor starrer Rangoon was recently announced to release on 30 September. But it will not pose a much threat as Vishal Bhardwaj’s films have limited appeals. So either of these films can release on 30th September. Though the holiday of Gandhi Jayanti will fall on Sunday. But there are not any big films releasing in this period. And a film with solid content can have a good run till Diwali.
The last option will be to postpone the film to next year. But its festive dates are being booked already. Dabbang 3, Sons of Sardars and Anand L. Rai’s next are expected to release on Eid, Dilwali and Christmas.
Both Salman and SRK are currently shooting for the film. Raees will be wrapped up soon while Sultan will take some time. Both films will be ready to release in a few months. It will be a setback for either of these films if they postpone.
