Toilet Ek Prem Katha Budget, Screen Count, Economics

Toilet Ek Prem Katha Budget, Screen Count, Economics: Bollywood is going through a very dull phase currently as there have been back to back failure. The trade is backing again on Akshay Kumar to provide some relief for distributors and exhibitors. Apart from Akshay, the film features Bhumi Pednekar in the lead role. It has got tax exemption in Uttar Pradesh before the release.

Toilet Ek Prem Katha Budget:

Just like most of Akshay Kumar releases, this one is also made on a very controlled budget. The production cost is just 18 crores while another 15 crores have been spent on marketing. Akshay has not taken any fee but will share profits with the producers. Thus the actual budget would be around 67 crores.

Toilet Ek Prem Katha Screen Count:

The film is expected to release in approximately 3200 screens which is a very good number. There is a good demand for the film so the actual screen count could go further high.

TEPK Economics:

  • Satellite Rights: 25 Cr
  • Music, video and other rights: 12 Cr
  • Distribution Rights: 53 Cr
  • Overseas: N/A
  • Recover Costs: 105 Cr
  • Hit: 110-115 Cr
  • Super Hit: 140 Cr

The trailer has worked and there is a reasonable buzz. Akshay’s last few films have fared better in multiplexes as compared to single screens and this might happen with TEPK too. We are expecting it to have a decent opening day, in the range of 12-13 crores.

Round Up:

Akshay Kumar, Bhumi Pednekar
Shree Narayan Singh
KriArj Entertainment
Release Date
11 Aug 2017
Run Time
155 min
68 Cr

‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’ film review
Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar are sincere in their roles but get bogged down with the propaganda message

      Manjusha Radhakrishnan, Chief Reporter
      15:55 August 10, 2017
Toilet Ek Prem Katha (61)tab_Akshay Kumar, Bhumi Pednekar in Toilet Ek Prem Katha)14
In Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Keshav (Akshay Kumar) isn’t expected to build a monument like the Taj Mahal that a Mughal emperor had built for his beloved wife, but a utility-friendly toilet for his bride (Bhumi Pednekar) who refuses to defecate in the open fields like the other women in his village.

Understandably, the college topper doesn’t want to be a part of the ‘lota party’ — the village sorority who do their morning business by trekking to the open fields with a lota (spherical water vessel) at the crack of dawn. It’s a merry group of women, if you discard their sordid outputs aside.

So, do Kumar — who’s all heart as Keshav — and his on-screen wife Jaya, played by Pednekar, come out smelling like roses in a film that begins by lauding the work of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Clean India Mission?

      Not always.

The satire, which takes a nick at the unholy, but prevalent practice of open defecation in India, comes across as a star-driven propaganda vehicle.

The second half was decidedly a crash course on the existing government’s noble attempts at providing toilets across India and to highlight the narrow-mindedness among Indians who are shackled by cultural and religious beliefs.

But don’t give up on this film yet, because it has some golden moments scattered across it.

The film starts on a promising note where we see a rakish Keshav, who runs a cycle store, being wed to a buffalo under the directions of his pious and conservative father. The animal will offset the misaligned stars, such is the belief.

Director Sree Narayan Singh has a superb knack of shrouding grim social scenarios and regressive traditions with wry humour.

Providing the verve to his vision is the urbane Kumar and Pednekar who do a splendid job of playing small-towners. It is Pednekar’s second film and she has an impressive command over her role as a feisty rebel.

Since it begins as a love story, a lot depends on their chemistry and they don’t disappoint. They are charming as a couple and their romantic escapades are endearing. It may be a bit disconcerting to see 49-year-old Kumar play a bachelor who is 36 and being smitten by a twenty-something woman, but since the actor is age-defying he seems to pull off the role. Even the bits where he follows her relentlessly is a questionable way of courtship, but Kumar manages to make it less creepy with his charismatic on-screen presence.

The first half is smooth, but it’s the second half that gets constipated. The premise which is intriguing and novel becomes repetitive and laboured. Some of the scenes in the second half seems contrived to make the current government shine and sparkle. Keshav and Jaya’s domestic problem snowballs into such a stinker of an issue that the entire state seems to be involved towards the end. There’s a good chance that you may have lost interest and your steam by all that drama surrounding a toilet-building battle.

Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, which clocks 175 minutes, would have benefited from tighter editing and fewer number of songs that showcase courtship, heartbreak and divorce.

Actors Sudhir Pandey (who plays the inflexible, traditionalist dad), Divyendu Sharma (Keshav’s jovial brother) and Anupam Kher (the naughty granddad with a penchant for watching raunchy Bollywood songs) complement the lead pair.

While the intention of this film is noble and should be lauded, the love story gets lost in the din of indoctrinating the glorious Indian government’s honourable campaign. Watch this if you are in the mood to witness earnest acting performances, but if you are looking for a propaganda-free film, then this is not it.

Dont know about the final verdict but will definitely cross 105crs. Happy to see stars like Ranveer and Varun promoting the movie thats the kind of harmony we need in the industry to support it especially this crucial phase where lots of dissapoinments have occured.

  3. I think screen count of TEPK would be around 3400-3500 . Bad performance of JHMS has also helped TEPK to some extent.
This screen count can insure a healthy opening day . Anything close to 14cr would be a excellent start . Nd wom will help it in coming days .

  4. I will be very pledged if someone tell me how budget is 67 ???
What things are added in budget ????
I am new so little bit confused in all these new terms

  5. Will be a hit…collections go upto 150crs if accepted well..the buzz is decent so accepting it to be a hit/superhit for sure..meanwhile my fdfs is confirmed..

Keeping fan war aside i want to tell All the best Akshay.I hope TEPK collect 150 crore and give Bollywood 1st 150 crore grosser of this year and Akshay also get his 1st 150 crore film and bring back the industry on track.

      • 👍 @prashant thanks. Hope SRK Anand l Rai movie enters 300cr club.
And we all should end fanwars. Akki nd SRK are actual stars. They are actually self made stars. Best wishes for both.

If i was Shah Rukh now i would reconsider doing any movie wuth Anuksha for now,i will also suspend Anand Rai Dwarf but promise him next 2 years i will do it for him,in between Srk should do a real Desi massy and classy movie. Srk has unbelievable potentials he just has to Quit choosng complicated complex roles that public dont need.

          • Probably a Wanted Singham Jolly llb2 ot Don series type of mass movies not bang bang type though.

          • I too i dont like Seeing Anuksha with Srk. Leave her with Ranbir or Ranveer where they can give her enough Screen space. You hardly saw Aamir or Salman sharing almost equal screen time with Anuksha or bigger heroines. Akshay Ajay will never allow any heroine to share even half of their own screen spaces. The era of Romantic movies has passed for Shah Rukh or expired. He still holds the title king of romance so why worry doing some unnecessary romantic films that too allowing Anuksha who is a baby compared to his overal stardom personality. Rowdy Rathode BB singham Dhoom 3 you hardly saw Sonakshi kareena Katrina in the film. Look at Bb kareena missing but big star cast for female ingredients was there. Rowdy Rathode Sonakshi lost , SR kareena lost, Dhoom 3 katreena lost jolly llb 2 not everybody knows the name of The heroine. Thats a superstar movie for you where audiences want to see their hero doing more and more scenes all the time. Sorry Srk i am one of your biggest fan but hate the idea almost half the movie will be concentrated on a low talented lucky 250-300 cr actress. Look at south , Tamanna was lost it was more of the prabhas and rana. Hope you can read this Sir.

          • @Gangs of Ajay. Its weird kind of but as a Shah Rukh khan fan i honestly praise you. Hardly you see fans of other Superstars talking good about almost all the 6 we have in the country (adding Hrithik). I do bash Ajay sometimes but believe me apart from maybe some misconceptions we had on him during his recent clashes i must admit on behalf of all Srk fans that we all respect him and watched probably almost all of his movies if not all. You write well and best wishes for Bdsh and g.again. Same with all Akkians best wishes for Tepk.

  7. Bollyarena where is Akshay Kumar’s market value. You added it to Salman and srk movies budget

  8. Was thinking of giving it a miss, but after watching JHMS, this looks like a Good Film. Will watch this weekend.
    Lifetime: 140cr

  9. Indian film industry already detroyed due to Bahubali….. This movie change indian people ‘s taste. So this year is more horrible for Bollywood. Salman, SRK now this time Akky will be failure.

    • Mumbai film industry destroyed due to Bahubali and not Indian film industry… Bahubali is part of Indian film industry only and it has taken Indian film industry to new heights…

  12. Bollyarena, I think You have been unfair in giving predictions for Akshay’s Movies, I clearly see TEPK going above 125 crores with atleast 50crore + weekend. And you were overrating JHMS, Which went totally opposite, So was Tubelight I don’t know why is this happening, I can challenge you here that movie will surely cross 125 Crore, if not 150.

  13. Opening day will 11-13cr & lifetime will 90-95cr I think story itni khas nai hogi !!!
