Star Wars: The Force Awakens has smashed a new record Wednesday. The seventh installment in the space saga became the highest-grossing film in North America, shooting past Avatar’s $760.5 million lifetime domestic haul in just 20 days.

Since its Dec. 18 debut in the U.S. and Canada, the movie crushed a series of records, according to a Disney press release. It was the fastest film to reach $100 million, doing so in 21 hours. It also pulled in the biggest opening week at $391 million.

But one title still eludes The Force Awakens: the highest-grossing film of all time. Its worldwide collection $1.5 billion is short of Avatar’s record-setting $2.8 billion, according to Variety. But those rankings might change after Jan. 9 when the new Star Wars film opens in China, the world’s second largest movie market.

The film was also released in India on 25 December but it could not collect much at the box office due to strong competition from domestic releases Bajirao Mastani and Dilwale.

  1. I think it will break avatar’s total collection and please post an article on the most anticipated hollywood movies this year

  2. Star wars is not much popular in China like in India.
Because Without watching the 6 films this new film is confusing for viewers.
It will finish its lifetime worldwide around 2000M $ & may beat the lifetime Worldwide of Titanic which is 2100M $.
Avatar’s worldwide of 2888M $ is out of reach.
BTW The trend of Star Wars 7 is strong but not as Terrific as Avatar had in 2009.
