Vishal Bhardwaj, the director of several critically acclaimed films such as Omkara, Kaminey, and Haider. Saif Ali Khan and Shahid Kapoor, who were at least stars at one point and even today have some level of popularity. Interestingly, the majority feel that both actors gave their career best performance in Omkara and Kaminey/Haider respectively, all three films that were directed by Vishal Bhardwaj. Kangana Ranaut, considered by many as one of the finest actresses in Bollywood and has had several major box office hits in recent times such as Queen and Tanu Weds Manu Returns.
Sometimes, a film which may seem interesting on paper ends up taking a u-turn. Days before its release, the film may have non-existant buzz. Rangoon is one such film!
There’s no need for me to beat around the bush. I will get to the biggest problem right away. For a period film set during World War II and India wanting Independence, one would expect the film to be largely based on just that. However, from the theatrical trailer, it appears as if the film will largely revolve around the love story triangle between Saif Ali Khan-Kangana Ranaut-Shahid Kapoor.
This is the biggest problem with Bollywood films. Every time there is an opportunity for a different film to be made, the makers resort to the same tried-and-tested formula. What could’ve been an interesting film on that 1944 war period, appears to be just another love story….perhaps, makers don’t realize that things like these are EXACTLY why footfalls have been declining year after year!
Also, as can be seen from the theatrical trailer, the film has sexual scenes that will prevent families from watching the film. Also, like other Vishal films, this film will also have zero appeal for the single screen audience. The only audience left then is the urban youth, and school exams will be starting for them soon, giving them less incentive to visit theatres.
The song promos have not worked either with the public. The opening of the film will be weak, given the star cast. If we look at the post-Valentine’s Day period in the month of February, then Shaadi Ke Side Effects is perhaps the biggest opener with 5.66 crore nett. Vishal/Shahid’s last film together (Haider) did 5.20 crore nett on its opening day. Another period film with no buzz, Bombay Velvet, did 5.24 crore nett on its opening day. Considering all of these films, I feel that Rangoon is destined to have an opening day collection in the 5 crore nett range.
The film may have its share of glorious critic reviews, the performances of the three leads may be praised (Shahid, Kangana, Saif in that order of most praised to least praised performance by critics and audience), but the film will also have its share of average/below average critic reviews. The audience WOM (Word of Mouth) will be mixed to negative, with only a very small section of the class audience appreciating the film. The lifetime collection of Rangoon will be lower than Haider, which collected approximately 49 crore nett.
Basically, after the already poor opening weekend, there will be only one way for Rangoon…downhill!
My Box Office Predictions for Rangoon:
- Opening Day: 5.25 crore net
- Opening Weekend: 16.75 crore net
- Lifetime Collection: 30 crore net
- Overall Box Office Verdict: Disaster
