One of the most hyped films in recent times, Padmaavat is going to release tomorrow. The film had been in deep troubles for months and it is still not over.
Padmaavat has been made on a budget of approx 190 crores. This does not include the costs for converting the film into 3D. Thus the final budget would surely go over 200 crores. This will make it the most expensive film in the history of Bollywood.
The makers were planning to release the film in 4500-5000 screens. However one day before release, this seems impossible. The film can face violent protests in several parts of the country which will force the theatre owners to not screen the film. Just recently, multiplex Association of India has announced that they would not screen Padmaavat in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Goa. The association represents about 75 percent of the multiplex owners in the country.
As of now it seems that the screen count could be around 3500. The final number could vary as the situation can change tomorrow. This is not a bad number at all considering all the factors involved. Golmaal Again managed to collect almost 30 crores on fewer screens.
Padmaavat is a very risky project when it comes to economics. If the film failed, then this will be a disastrous result for the trade and the industry. The makers might have managed to get extraordinary deals for satellite and digital rights. But the film still needs to work at the box office to recover the amount. It needs to go over 200 crores at the very least.
The response to the advance booking is average which was very much expected. There have been violent protests across the country and it has got a wide media coverage. As a result, the audience was reluctant to book tickets. This does not mean that the big opening is out of an equation. The controversy has helped to increase the buzz but the actual impact will be known tomorrow.
