The Live QnA session is over now.
You can discuss answers and write your feedback in the comments. We have noted down the questions that need explanations. The second detailed Q&A session will be held a few days later.
Q. Why Yash Raj is not promoting Sultan on a big scale like Ek Tha Tiger? Is Sultan buzz is anywhere near Ek Tha Tiger?
Ans. It is quite strange from YRF. First, it was Shahrukh Khan’s Fan which has poor marketing and now Sultan promotions have not been started. We hope they will not repeat the mistake. Though the buzz of Sultan will remain high because of Salman and Eid factor.
We don’t see any film in near future that can match the buzz generated by Ekk Tha Tiger.
Ans. The expectations have always been high. But the recent underperformance of big films and the lack of blockbusters from actors like Akshay, Ajay, Hrithik or Ranbir have resulted in too many responsibilities on Khan’s shoulders. The industry needs bankable stars who can push their films to 150+. After Khans or Hrithik, we have struggled to even find a single megastar. Ranbir was looking promising however his back to back flops have damaged his reputations. Aamir is delivering back to back blockbusters while Salman can even convert ordinary films like PRDP or Ready into big hits. The opening of SRK’s films has been record- breaking.
So we will alway look forward to Khan’s films.
Ans. The makers will try their best to release the film on 17th June. It is a golden chance to cash on the controversy as all the news channels have been covering the film from last week or so. If it gets delayed then it will struggle to take the expected opening.
Ans. Absolutely, They are way much better than us. We are only one year old and has still a lot to learn.
Ans. The top 6 six superstars are beyond rating as they have proven their worth many times. The rest is as follows.
Ans. There is no superhero in the real world. That’s why they want to see then in the films.
Ans. We only review major films. Our main focus is on the box office performance.
Ans. ETT, Happy New Year, Dhoom 3, PRDP.
Ans. In today’s time, a 150 crore grosser on a normal holiday is the biggest achievement. We don’t remember any of the film doing so except Hrithik Roshan’s Bang Bang. 100 crore on a non-holiday is also tough. 200 crore on EDX has become a norm for Khans.
Ans. As we have mentioned earlier the box office trend has changed in last year. The business has more become multiplex oriented. The genre and appeal have become all important. Masala films are finding it hard to get an initial in metros as the audience is fed up with the same formula applied in every film. They are looking for something new and fresh and thus is opting for Hollywood. After Netflix, Hollywood films have become quite popular in India. The latest, The Conjuring 2 box office opening is a proof of that as the first film in the franchise was very popular.
Ans. Drishyam (Semi-Hit), Jai Gangaajal (Average), Brothers (Flop), Azhar (Flop)
All verdicts are available on our website.
Ans. The trailer has received a mixed response from audience and trade. That was probably because of the high expectations. So far the buzz is okay but the music look promising. It will pick up when the promotions will start. The opening of the film will be very good due to the film’s genre and the presence of Varun.
Ans. Bollywood and South Cinema are different from each other. The taste of the audience is completely opposite. What works down South is unlikely to be appreciated in core Hindi belts. Except Baahubali and Robot, all South films have failed big time here. Having said so, South directors also like to work in Tollywood because they have creative liberty here. However the directors like AR Murugadoss and Mani Ratnam have been successful in Bollywood.
As far as the actors are concerned, it is very unlikely to happen. Prabhas is considered as a big star in Tollywood. But when Baahubali was released, most of the Hindi audience were more familiar with Rana Daggubati because he has worked in a couple of Bollywood films.
Salman Khan – Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994)
Aamir Khan – Ghajini (2008), 3 Idiots (2009), Dhoom 3 (2013), PK (2014)
Shahrukh Khan – Chennai Express (2013)
Ans. TE3N was never expected to take a good initial. The film has a niche genre which only works in some parts of the country. So even if it has the solid content, its fate will depend on the multiplexes of Kolkata, Mysore, and Mumbai.
Ans. 125 Crore.
Ans. Abhishek featured in Dhoom 3, Happy New Year, Bol Bachchan etc. But his last solo release All Is Well released last year turned out to be a big flop. So the multi-starers don’t help you a lot unless you have a strong character to portray. He is out from Hera Pheri 3.
Ans. Rustom 35-50 Crore without Akshay’s fee (confirmed by Zee Studio). Mohenjo Daro budget should be over 100 crores.
Ans. Mohenjo Daro mainly because of director’s track record. Hrithik will make a comeback after two years so the initial will be huge. And after that, the content will come into play.
Shivaay has also high points. But the clash with Ae Dil Mushkil and Ajay’s track record as a director can limit its potential.
Ans. Eros International tend to do this when they are distributing a film. However, they also increase figures on someday so the overall trade and producer figures are same. For example, yesterday it was expected to collect 4.50 crore, but the official number came out to be 5.05. The same happened with Bajrangi Bhaijaan too.
Ans. We were not tracking box office numbers then so no idea about Happy New Year. Drishyam collections were manipulated, but after the first week, they were revised to actual figures. Recently Mastizaade collection was exaggerated to 20%.
Ans. It’s a tough question. Bajrangi Bhaijaan broke all TRP records on its TV premier and is popular among all section of the audience. PK, on the other hand, continues to face some criticism from religious groups. However, PK can be watched multiple times due to laugh riot first half. So our pick is PK.
Ans. No, only a rumour.
Ans. Housefull 3 has not under-performed. However, you can say that it has not lived up to the expectations. The film was seen as a potential 150 crore + grosser.
Box office trend has been changing in last one year. The audience is opting for content oriented films. The market for action, masala and comedy is down. The negativity of Entertainment, Humshakals and Himmatwala has also affected. People have the perception about some directors that they will always make poor films.
