Akshay Kumar had a tremendous year at the box office in 2016. All three of his films (Airlift, Housefull 3, Rustom) crossed the 100 crore mark and more importantly, two of those films (Airlift and Rustom) emerged a Super Hit. He defeated Hrithik Roshan at the box office during the Rustom vs Mohenjo Daro clash and given the fact that Rustom opened nearly double that of Mohenjo Daro, Akshay Kumar now has a bigger box office pull than Hrithik and Akshay is now in 4th position, behind the three Khans.
Interestingly, 2016 was the first year since 2007 where Akshay Kumar had a 100% success ratio with all of his films in the year emerging a box office success! Furthermore, Akshay came second only to Salman Khan on Ormax Media Most Popular Male Stars of India 2016!
It's 2017 now, and he's gearing up for his first release of the year: Jolly LLB 2, the sequel to Jolly LLB which released in 2013. This time, the captain of the ship (the director) remains the same: Subhash Kapoor.
The trailer of Jolly LLB 2 released near the end of December and received a positive response, although there were some who felt that it seems the makers have decided to commercialize the film more than it needs to be. Nonetheless, it was a positive response. The song promos, as well as the second theatrical trailer, all have received a positive reponse as well, although none of the songs have really gotten to chartbuster status (Go Paagal may get there).
With the promos of Jolly LLB 2 clicking with viewers and Akshay Kumar returning after three major box office hits, and Akshay coming second only to Salman on Ormax Media Male Stars India Loves 2016, the opening of the film will be there, that is assured. I'm expecting Jolly LLB 2 to have a bigger opening than Rustom because this film is not clashing with another film (which was the case with Rustom) and also the fact that Jolly LLB from 2013 has recall value with viewers as that film emerged a box office success, which further helps the sequel.
Normally, I would expect Jolly LLB 2 to open lower than Housefull 3 as Housefull is a bigger brand and that film had Ritesh Deshmukh, Abhishek Bachchan, and Jacqueline Farnandez to contribute their bit to the opening day collection. However, there is the holiday of Guru Ravidas Jayanti this Friday, which means that there will be a holiday in places like Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab (a stronghold area of Akshay where he has a huge fan following). Overall, I think Jolly LLB 2 will have a slightly better opening day collection than Housefull 3.
The question after the opening of a film is whether the film will sustain, and that can only be determined by the extent of which the film is appreciated. Jolly LLB by the same director Subhash Kapoor was well-appreciated, but then he directed another film in 2015 called Guddu Rangeela which sank without a trace and was poorly received. There is also the fact to mention again that some people (particularly a section of the multiplex audience) may not appreciate the commercial factors added to the film (Go Paagal type song sequences) as they may want a more realistic film. On the bright side, the film does have universal appeal, as it appeals to both the multiplex audience and the single screen audience. Keeping all of these factors in mind, I feel that the All-India public WOM (Word of Mouth) will be mixed, leaning more towards the positive side.
The three highest grossers in the month of February are Gunday (78 cr net), Neerja (76 cr net), and My Name is Khan (73 cr net). Out of these three films, the only film with an opening similar to that of what Jolly LLB 2 will have is Gunday, which had a 16 crore net opening, 62% Ormax Media audience WOM score, and finished with lifetime collection of 78 crore net. Jolly LLB 2 will have better WOM than Gunday, and I feel that Jolly LLB 2 will become the highest February grosser. The lifetime collection will be close to right in the middle between Gunday (78 crore net) and his other recent high grossers Airlift/Rustom (127-128 crore net).
