Highest Grossing Hollywood Movies of 2016 in India

India is emerging as a big market for Hollywood films. Some have the opinion that Hollywood has taken over Bollywood when it comes to domestic box office collection. This may or may not be true but Hollywood films are taking much better initials as compared to medium/small budgeted films.

It was The Jungle Book which shattered each and every possible record in India by grossing over 185 crore. It is currently highest grosser of 2016 ahead of all Bollywood films. It stands way higher than the second position holder Airlift which collected 128 crore. The Jungle Book is the biggest Hollywood hit ever and was declared as an “All Time Blockbuster”.

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice was also targetted as 100 crore hit in India. However, it received largely negative reviews and mixed response. Captain America fared well. The other films that surprised were The Conjuring 2, Kung Fu Pada 3 and The Angry Birds.

The Conjuring 2 had a very good opening and collected double as compared to Bollywood release TE3N in the first week. This came as a big surprise and shocked many trade pundits. It was probably due to the popularity of the first film in the franchise The Conjuring. It has now become the 2nd highest Hollywood grosser of 2016 in India.

Kung Fu Pada 3 and The Angry Birds were small films and received mixed reviews. However, both emerged as success as they got a good response from children and families. Kung Fu Pada 3 is the highest grossing Hollywood animated film in India. Deadpool was a disappointment in India though as it did very well in worldwide and currently stands at number 2 position in the biggest hits of this year.

Update 18 August:

The second half of the year has not been so great for Hollywood in India. The Independence Day: Resurgence which was released on 24th June, fared very well despite mixed reviews. Steven Spielberg’s The BFG was promoted well but it turned out to be a big disappointment. Ice Age was postponed to avoid the clash with Sultan but it could not help it either. Jason Bourne and Suicide Squad were released before Independence Day weekend and did average to poor business. Suicide Squad was better and has made it the top 10 highest grossers of 2016.

How does this compare with all overseas collection of Hindi movies? This adds up to about $110M. I don’t think the overseas collections of all Hindi movies will add to that much. Will be interesting to see the comparison
