Box Office Predictions for Baadshaho: It was back in 2010, when the pair of Ajay Devgan and Emraan Hashmi came together for Milan Luthria’s Hit film Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai. Seven years later, the team reunites! Baadshaho has a story based on gold. But not all that glitters is gold. As a matter of fact, the film’s run at the box office will be far from anything gold!

There are a couple of problems with this film, the biggest being the treatment and story of the film. Films based on stealing usually don’t work too well at the box office, a big example in recent times being the film Players. There were exceptions, of course, with robbery films such as Kick and Dhoom 3, but both of those films were more about the star showcase of the superstar Khans in each respective film, and both films had the robbery theme only in the background. Kick ultimately had a story based on Salman supporting a child, and Dhoom 3 had a story of Aamir wanting revenge for his father. Also, it’s one thing for Baadshaho to be based on stealing gold, but to have it in an old setting (the Emergency period) makes it hard for the urban youth to connect with this type of film.

The treatment of the film is a problem, as the film gives the vibe of one of those desi masala films that were being released in the 2010-2013 period after Dabangg. Those films stopped being made because the genre got tired and watered down. What’s even worse in the case of Baadshaho is that it’s one of those desi masala films with steamy/sexual scenes, similar to films like Shootout at Wadala. Such films tend to not trend well at the box office, largely because they keep the family audience away.

Box Office Predictions for Baadshaho

Milan Luthria started the decade with Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai (Hit) and The Dirty Picture (Super Hit), but then he delivered a box office flop with Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai Dobaara! Baadshaho is the director’s next film, four years after OUATIMD. Actually, it’s another problem in itself that not only the director, but the main leads are also returning after delivering flop films: Ajay Devgn with Shivaay, and Emraan Hashmi with Raaz Reboot and eight other flops before that film!

Finally, the film has a little buzz. The trailer seemed to have received a decent response, and the Rashke Qamar song is a chartbuster, but the buzz is still missing. It could be because of the fact that the main leads and the director are returning after giving flop films individually (as I pointed out above), or it could be because the film seems like a typical maar-dhaar, old style film with sexuality added. Again, this keeps away the family audience.

The opening of the film will be decent/good on the merit of Ajay Devgn’s starpower and solid collections for evening/night shows as the next day is a major Bakrid holiday, but that’s about it really. In comparison to other films post-Baahubali 2, I predict the opening day collection of Baadshaho will be above Jagga Jasoos, but lower than Half Girlfriend. Monday onwards, the downward trend will start. I feel that the public WOM (Word of Mouth) for Baadshaho will be mixed: Good at some mass centres, but below average at multiplexes/metros, and ultimately negative with family audience.

My Box Office Predictions for Baadshaho:

  • Opening Day: 9 crore nett
  • Opening Weekend: 30+ crore nett
  • Lifetime Collections: 52 crore nett
  • Overall Verdict: Flop
