There has been a lot of hype around Varun and John's action-adventure film Dishoom. The theatrical trailer of the film was released today. The film has been directed by Varun’s brother Rohit Dhawan.
The film revolves around the missing Indian batsman Viraj who is kidnapped by a gangster Waagha (Akshay Khanna). The Indian intelligence agencies call agent Kabir (John) to rescue the kidnapped batsman. Junaid (Dhawan) plays Kabir’s partner. The third vital player of this game is double agent Jacqueline Fernandez. Together, they set out on a mission to rescue Viraj before an all important India-Pakistan final.
John Abraham is a stern cope and Varun is a funny one. It may remind you of Abhishek and Uday of Dhoom series (Dishoom also looks similar in name). The director's main focus is only on CGI and John-Varun's muscular body. There is so much rush in the trailer like action sequences, punches and blows, cars flying in Rohit Shetty style. There is also a random scene of John and Abraham standing in a flying helicopter and bikini shot of Nargis Fakhri. That made no sense at all.
The writing by Milap Zaveri (Mastizaade fame) is very poor. John Abraham looks well as a serious cop but Varun Dhawan fails to impress. We all loved him as Raghu in Badlapur. But here he tries too hard to balance humor and anger but ended up being the second lead. His clean shaven look also does not suit the character.
Akshay Khanna is making a comeback with Dishoom and he has stolen the show as a villain. He looked completely in his character. The story also looks fresh and locations were good. Music by Pritam will be something to wait for.
The makers have tried to make a full masala entertainer film but they have failed. There was no need for comedy scenes which were poor written. Varun Dhawan is a bankable star and the combo of action and music will ensure solid opening. But such kind of films can go terribly wrong if the direction is not up to the mark.
