This year started with a bang as there were two big movies (Raees and Kaabil) lined up to release in January. Both performed reasonably well too by making money in excess of 200cr. In the beginning, things were also looking pretty good when eyes fell on the list of upcoming movies as this year big stars like Salman and SRK had two releases. Apart from these, most awaited ‘Baahubali The Conclusion’ was about to release.
Finally, the day had arrived when Baahubali 2 released and what it did the at box-office is simply historic as the film collected net 500cr from Hindi version alone. No word is there to describe this phenomenon but the debacle of Hindi films started after that when one release after another fell flat at the box-office. Biggest of them was the disastrous performance of an EID release Tubelight starring Salman Khan which ended its run at 120 cr. As of now, 7 months are about to end but not a single blockbuster have come from Bollywood and looking at the upcoming releases chances are also minimal. Let take a look on few of the upcoming releases and box-office expectations.
Jab Harry Met Sejal (4th August): JHMS is bringing two different, very successful persons together – one is the Superstar SRK and the other is an acclaimed director Imtiaz Ali. So on paper it was looking like an exciting collaboration as expectations were that audiences will get to see something different from this team. But when promos came on then it proved everyone wrong since it was looking like a more of Imitiaz’s film than Srk’s.
It is clear that it is going to be the same urban rom-com which Imitiaz is churning out since the beginning of his career. In this post-Baahubali era, rom-com genre has almost died. The situation became bitter for JHMS when RCE came with its poor marketing strategy of releasing mini trailers. As of now considering romantic genre, the music album of JHMS is a big let down. So neither songs have worked nor genre is favourable. Only SRK stardom is the positive thing for JHMS from box-office perspective.

Toilet Ek Prem Katha (11 August): After a well-received trailer buzz of TEPK has gone down and it is probably due to the early release of trailer and follow-up of average songs. But still, it can open decently due to the presence of Akshay and genre of movie as today films which are based on Heartland of India seems to excite audiences and also film revolves around a social topic of making toilets in rural areas which will be more relatable for people of core Hindi belt.
Over the years we have seen some big changes in audiences from big cities if we go by success of Dangal, Sultan and even BKD then it has been noticed that even multiplex audiences are preferring movies with a rural setting where TEKP have a lead over JHMS .So considering the entire scenario, prediction of TEKP is going to be extremely difficult as it is depending upon a lot of factors.

A Gentleman (25 August): is looking like a low-budget BangBang (2014). Director Siddharth Anand last film Bang Bang which was also in the same genre underperformed 3 yrs ago but it was saved upto large extent due to strong opening because of festive weeknd and starpower of Hrithik-Katrina. Here it will not get those advantages as both Siddharth Malhotra n Jacqueline Fernandez has less following. As far as box-office pull of Siddharth is concerned we have seen it in BaarBaarDekho where he was paired with Katrina and also had chatbuster album but despite of all of these film opened at disappointing numbers of 6.8cr.
Considering all the factors only thing looking positive for ‘A Gentleman’ is its genre which is action-comedy and also up to some extent music can help as Disco Disco has become hit. The trailer has received well but not it is not up to the level of director’s last film BangBang.

Baadshaho (1 September): Baadshaho is bringing back the successful team of OUATIM where Milan Lutharia was the director. OUATIM became hit in 2010 and Ajay’s character of Sultan Mirza became iconic. The music of the film can be its biggest plus point. Sunny Leone and Emraan Hashmi is a lethal combination and Piya More song from Baadshao is proof of it. Rashke Qamar an another song from Baadshao which released some weeks ago has also become huge hit so music will help Baadshao. OUATIM released in 2010 with less screens and cheaper ticket prices made 60cr so assuming Baadshao having the same WOM I am predicting it to collect near 90cr.
