Bollywood Overseas Box Office in 2016
2016 has proved to be an average year for Bollywood. While the domestic business has reduced as compared to last year, Bollywood films have also underperformed in overseas this year. On the other hand, Hollywood films have been doing great business in India.
Right now we are in the 10th month of the year and only two films Sultan and Fan have been able to cross 10 million marks in overseas. Those movies have big names like Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan. Sultan was released on Eid and did some record breaking business over the extended first weekend. Fan was not a full-fledged commercial film and fared well.
Kapoor and Sons surpassed the expectations as it did very well in UK and Gulf. Normally Dharma’s film tends to perform well outside India. Akshay Kumar has a good year as all of his films emerged hits in overseas. Gulf has now become his strong hold. Mohenjo Daro fared decent in overseas but it was not up to the standards set by Hrithik Roshan earlier. Another film that surprised was Tiger Shroff’s Baaghi.

The UK and Australia-New Zealand markets are very much down this year. In fact, Punjabi films have dominated over Bollywood in circuits of Aus-NZ. On the other hand, Gulf and Pakistan are now contributing more to Bollywood’s overseas revenue.
In last 3 months, there are some big films releasing. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Dangal are expected to gross over 10 million. But an ideal target for Dangal should be to go over 25 million which will take 2016’s revenue close to last year.
