Eid is considered as the second best release period after Christmas. Muslims stay away from theaters during Ramadan which give a huge boost to Eid day. There are also some holidays later on.
Mostly this period is associated with Salman Khan. He started the trend with the release of Wanted back in 2009 and since then he has dominated Eid like never seen before. He just missed this opportunity in 2013 when SRK released Chennai Express which also came out with record numbers.
Take a look at the recent Eid releases. * indicates an all-time record.
Ek Tha Tiger
Dabangg and Bodyguard both were released on Eid day and had record breaking opening. Ek Tha Tiger released on Independence Day (3 days before Eid) and smashed all kind of opening records possible. It just missed highest grosser of all time 3 Idiots by 4 crores margin.
Shahrukh Khan’s Chennai Express not only become the highest opener but also broke 3 Idiots record which stood for 4 years. Kick and Bajrangi Bhaijaan had a pre-Eid release so the opening was less but the lifetime collections were healthy.
Looking at the above table, it is clear that opening is always historic on Eid day. So Sultan is surely going to challenge HNY opening record if Eid falls on 6th July. One interesting point is only Bajrangi Bhaijaan was a content driven film and all others were masala action films.
Now coming back to Sultan it may get an Eid release and also has a chance to break all opening records. But the word of mouth should be positive to achieve a heavy lifetime collection as it is not a regular masala film.
