Bollywood Box Office Verdict 2016
We have come to the end of the first half of 2016. This year started on a good a note especially in the first quarter. However, later on, there were some disappointments.
2016 mainly belongs to content oriented/multiplex driven films. Movies like Airlift, Neerja and Kapoor and Sons dominated the box office riding high on word of mouth and solid content. The single screens did not perform well until the release of Baaghi. Though they contributed towards Ghayal Once Again and Jai Gangajaal.
Airlift opened to high critical acclaim and was also loved by the audience. The film also took the advantage of Republic Day holiday which helped it to have the highest first week if 2016 so far. The most surprising hit from Bollywood was Sonam Kapoor starrer Neerja. It had an opening of 4.7 and went on to collect 76 cr in its lifetime run with an ROI of 300%. Baaghi was also a major hit with the second highest footfalls of this year.
Fan turned out to be a disappointment. After taking the highest opening of 2016, it could not maintain the momentum and had heavy falls on weekdays. Housefull 3 emerged hit but more was expected from this comedy film. Small films like TE3N, Sarbjit, Aligarh, Phobia and Zubaan continued to disappoint despite receiving rave reviews
While Bollywood was struggling to give a huge grosser it was Hollywood who has delivered the first universally appealing blockbuster The Jungle Book. Hollywood films seem to dominate this year as Captain America, Batman V Superman and The Conjuring 2 also emerged hits.
So far this year belongs to Akshay Kumar with two clean hits of different genres. In the actresses, it is Alia Bhatt who received rave reviews for her performance and also tasted success.
