Azhar Movie Review: Azhar is a sports drama film directed by Tony D’Souza. The film stars Emraan Hashmi, Prachi Desai and Nargis Fakhri in the lead roles. It has been produced by Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Films. Azhar is releasing on 13 May 2016.
The film has been promoted on a big scale by the makers. There is also a good buzz around the film and it is looking like Emraan’s biggest film since Raaz 3. Let’s move on to Azhar review to find out if it lives up to the expectations.
Azhar Movie Review: Synopsis & Analysis
Azhar is a biopic about the former Indian cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin. The film is a story of Azhar and his journey to become one of India’s most successful cricket captains who later on was banned due to fixing charges. Tainted with battered past, bruised with horrific memories, his lady love helped him get focus in life. The evolution of an urchin boy to the man who won laurels for his nation will have you awestruck.
The film is an intelligently disguised story of a man who is India’s most controversial cricketer. Azhuraddin’s life story has the right ingredients for a clever biopic which the makers have executed with delectable imagination. However at many points, the film scatter in terms of story or intention and does not steer close to the relevant facts. The biggest disadvantage is the pathetic visual effects. The cricket sequences look completely unreal but luckily the film is more about the action out the field. Though in terms of melodrama the story is not restricted at all. Azhar is smartly packed with judicious amounts of highs and lows, making the film’s recipe flawless.
Azhar Review: Direction, Editing, Screenplay
After Boos, D’Souza faced a stark low and with Azhar he tries to make up. His storytelling has the sparkling vision and his style has the ability to keep you latched to the screens. The story’s strength is in its reality and Rajat Arorra has ensured that the screenplay rightfully fits in every bit coherently.
The editing is okay. The music has already become super hit and the background score is top notch too. The songs like Bol Do Na Zara and Itni Si Baat Hai are beautifully choreographed.
Azhar Movie Review: Star Performances
Emraan Hashmi has immersed in himself the soul of Azhurddin. Giving one of the performances of his career, he is resplendent as Azhar. He brings out the character’s vulnerability with charm and his passion with force. But we hope that he could have been better in his cricket skills.
Nargis Fakhri looks lovely in her little role in her limited screen time. However in emotional sequences, she was weak. Prachi Desai plays Emraan’s first wife spotlessly well. A pillar of support for Azhar, she plays helplessness with command. Her chemistry with Emraan is also something to watch for.
Gutam Gulati, Lara Datta and Rajesh Sharma also leave a mark with their splendid performances.
♦ Good direction
♦ Emraan & Prachi terrific performances
♦ Shocking turns & twists
♦ Right does of melodrama
♦ Poor VFX
♦ Nargis could have been better
♦ Unreal Cricket sequences
Azhar Review Final Verdict:
Azhar will have you captivated with its grit and enigma. Also, brace yourself for some shocking revelations that you may find tough to digest. But as the film was a biopic on a cricketer, it could have been much better with proper visual effects. The star cast was also not that strong which is required for a biopic. I am going with 3/5 stars.
